A while back, I found myself being dragged about Walmart hunting health food with my Mom. Needless to say, health food is not something that interests me much (wink). So, instead of helping, like a decent person, I wrote this short, 13 tweet story, and posted it on Twitter.
Once upon a time, there was a man who lived by the sea. He spent most of his time fishing.
One day, he saw a beautiful woman poke her head up from the watery depths and smile at him.
The man thought he was hallucinating.
(#horror thread).
But then again, he'd seen her clear as day. He decided to speak to her.
They became fast friends once he'd convinced himself she was real.
He'd never seen a mermaid before.
Did she have a tail instead of legs?
He was curious.
She was coy.
One day, they kissed.
The fisherman thought it was magnificent. Her lips were soft and sweet and when they touched his, it gave him gooseflesh.
The 'mermaid' gave him a promise that day.
"Come back, after dark." She said. "I'll show you my true form, but only in darkness."
The fisherman was just happy he was getting somewhere. He'd never spoken to or met an honest-to-God supernatural creature before, but he'd always believed they existed. Soon, after the sun set, he'd have proof.
He'd see the mermaid's tail with his own eyes.
He couldn't wait. He came in from the sea early that day.
Showered and shaved, then went back to his small fishing boat.
He watched the sun set as the waves rocked him into a sweet contentment. When the moon began to rise, he rowed out into the ocean.
Anticipation turned into pinpricks of anxiety.
'Why at night?' he asked himself. He thought about turning back, but curiosity got the best of him and he rowed farther out.
It wasn't long before he saw her. She looked bluish in the moonlight.
"I knew you'd come."
She let her forearms rest on the side of his boat and folded her hands underneath her chin.
"Let me see you," he said, then moved over and patted the bench next to him. "Come and sit with me."
"I cannot." She said.
"Why?"
"I'm too big."
He frowned, not understanding. The boat began to rise out of the water, lifted up by the sheer massive thing that was 'her tail'. It was bigger than a whale, and it pushed his tiny boat up towards the night sky.
The mermaid rose out of the water. She was just a small part attached to something much bigger. Something horrific.
He could see the huge sea dwelling creature, it blocked out the ocean. It was the biggest thing he'd ever seen. All he could see was slimy scales.
And tentacles.
The thing was so large, he couldn't make out what it even was.
What had he done?
Why had he trusted the 'mermaid'? Nothing as beautiful or as wonderful as her had ever happened to him before, so why should this time have been any different?
Those thoughts and others like it were the last to run though his mind as he was consumed.
He never brought his boat back to the dock. He never did anything ever again.
But, if the fisherman had lived to tell his tale, he would have recommended that you stay away from the sea. That everyone stay away from the sea. And if, by some chance, you see a 'mermaid' and are foolish enough to speak with her, or trust her...
Then you deserve what you get.
(This thread was inspired by an episode of #Futurama).
