Everyday For A Month: Day 24

"I never get what I want," Nina huffed. "Instead, I have to watch her get everything, day after day."

'Take it back', said the voices from the wall. 'Retrieve everything she has taken from you.'

"I will." Nina said to the walls.

Nina set out to take back her husband, who had left her for Mary. With help from the walls, she snuck, connived, plotted and blackmailed until, finally, Todd came home.

Then Nina decided she wanted Mary's laugh too, because that's what Todd had said he liked best about Mary. He'd said this once at a party when he didn't think Nina was listening, but she'd heard him. So she took Mary's perfect laugh with a spell and a few drops of blood.

The walls told her how.

Next to go was Mary's hair. Nina loved Mary's hair and wished it was her own. One night, when Mary was asleep, she shaved it off and took the perfect locks for herself. Leaving Mary bald and ugly gave Nina great pleasure.

Nina still hated Mary.
No matter what she did, Mary always seemed to get the best out of every situation.

Now, all Nina has are the walls.

Todd put her in a room guarded by people in white and now all Nina has are the walls. They still whisper and tell her things. But now, they mostly laugh at her.

'So easily tricked' they say. 'So confused and angry' they say. They read the placard on the other side of Nina's locked door. The voices in the wall read the name to her over and over and and over: Nina Mary Anderson.

** Note**
(I really don't care for this 'story' if you can even call it that, but for better or worse, it's what I wrote for day 24... = )

Everyday For A Month: Day 23

"Your anger is getting the best if you," said the woman, "It's eating you up." Then she pointed to the black veins running up my arm towards my elbow... well, what was left of my elbow.

"Lady, if I wanted your advice, I promise, I'd ask for it." I snapped. I waited for the doctor to call my name. Waiting rooms were disgusting, full of abhorrent people and even nastier diseases.

"I'm just saying, it's something you can fix yourself."

"Mind your business, woman." I growled. She raised her eyebrows in a sort of shrug.

"Suit yourself." She mumbled.

Five minutes later, they called me back. I told my physician what was wrong, that part of my body was missing, because of these black veiny webs that were eating my hand and forearm/ elbow.

She said she didn't see what the problem was. She told me to go home and get some rest.

I screamed at her and threw a magazine.

By the time I got home, my upper arm was missing. I kicked my coffee table across the living room. Then threw a vase at my wife.

By morning, my legs were gone. Eaten up by a cruel, black, tar-like sludge that crawled up my body in the night. I told my wife if she didn't help me, when I got better, I'd fucking kill her.

She rolled her eyes and left me alone, knowing I couldn't get up to come after her bitch ass.

Even though part of me was missing, I still felt like I was there. But, sure enough, I was disappearing.

I suppose the woman in the waiting room was right, I was losing myself to my anger. I suppose that's what happens when you kick people enough times, they write you off and watch you fade away, laughing as you go.

Everyday For A Month: Day 20

The spiral staircase led to a bare wall. A plain slab of sheetrock that held nothing. Not a clock, no pictures. Nothing.

Jaime was determined to find out what lay behind that wall even if it killed her.
“Just knock it down. The suspense is driving me nuts.” She told her husband as she stood behind him on the stairs.
“It just leads to a small balcony. They probably sealed it off because they didn’t want their kids out there running around unattended.”
“Probably, but either way. I wanna see.”
“Alright. I’ll go get the sledgehammer.” Kyle turned to Jaime and gave her a quick peck on the lips as he descended. “Expect a trip to Lowe's when we see what we're dealing with.”
“Yeah, I expect it.” She chuckled still staring at the wall.
Ten minutes later, Kyle came back up, sledgehammer in hand and started gouging out the wall. They took turns until it was done, but no light shone through from the other side.
There was darkness, and nothing else.

Everyday For A Month: Day 19

I always used to tell myself... odd things.

Like, make weird predictions.

For example, I’d be rooting through my wallet, find a $2 bill, and in my head, I’d say something like, "you're going to spend that $2 at a gas station in Montauk" or, "2 years from now, the t-shirt that guy was wearing at the bus stop is going to be important to you".

Just ramblings.
Weirdo thoughts.
Things that didn't make any sense.
They never came true.

Until yesterday, when I said to myself, "you're going to regret meeting Sarah. This is going to be the worst thing that ever happened to you."

The voice that said those words inside my head was mine, but it didn’t sound like me. It sounded more sure. More absolute.

In short, the little warning stuck with me.

Why would I even say something like that about a woman who was quickly becoming the girl of my dreams? I mean, it wasn’t like I’d meant to say it; it was more like mental word vomit that just popped into my head.

Unfortunately once it did, I couldn’t make it go away.
Sarah picked at her salad across the table from me.

“Dylan, are you okay?”
I nodded and looked around the busy restaurant.

Everyday For A Month: Day 18

futuristic-fonts

Womp. Womp. Womp.

That's how it started. Everyone in the world could hear it, I think. And if they didn't actually hear it, then they felt the vibrations associated with it.

Womp. Womp. Womp.

A sound so loud, it became hard to breathe. Like the noise was vibrating the air and making it impossible to suck into your lungs.
When you hear something that loud. That big. It makes your heart drop into your stomach. The tips of your fingers tingle. You start to shake and contemplate what it is to die. To stop existing.

And where would I be at the beginning of the end of world? Delivering groceries to an asshat named Brad. Which is kinda funny because my name is also Brad. Except for when I deliver groceries to Brad, then my given name morphs to Other Brad.

I hate my job.

So I knocked on the door and Cool Brad (his idea, not mine) answers. Of course he's shirtless. As if to remind me of my own bony chest and he says: “Sup Shitty Brad.”
Ah, so I've devolved to Shitty Brad.
Beautiful. Just what I needed today.

ℌ𝔬𝔴 𝔗𝔬 ℌ𝔢𝔵... ( 𝔟𝔶 𝔗𝔥𝔦𝔢𝔯𝔯𝔶 𝔄𝔡𝔩𝔢𝔯)

For a hex with any power, you'll need at least a 3"x 3" sheet of hide. It should be cured and properly treated. It's important to carve your mark into the middle of it.

The 𝖒𝖞𝖘𝖙è𝖗𝖊𝖘 need to know who's asking. If you'd like to skip the "signing of the hide" part, then the skin should be your own. The next ingredient refers to the length of the hex. I like to use rocks. They last a long time.

Pill Trees

In the dark, I heard crickets as I stood in a nameless field. Cool grass brushed against my shins and I felt it under my toes, so I knew I must've been barefoot.
The moon was out. I could see a few stars. It was vivid. Clear as a bell, but somehow I knew that this place was all just a dream.
Something rustled behind me.
I turned to see a white rabbit. I didn't get the reference to Alice, or the clear symbolic significance, but I followed it blindly. Down a path lined with trees that bore strange fruit: blueish-green pills with the letter ‘M’ engraved in their middles. Pink twenties. I knew these fruits and my mouth watered. I wanted to stop and pick one. To sink my teeth into it and eat it up, then lay back on the cold grass in the meadow and ‘float’.

Empress Of The Void

A 12 Tweet Post I did for "Tales From The End Of The World" aka #tfteotw hosted by Marc Tizura.

1. People talked about what they were, but we never knew. Days would pass; months-- years even, and nothing fresh would emerge. Just the same old story. They'd find us, off-guard and ask to be let in.

2. We'd always say no. Of course we'd say that, because, who would invite a demon into their home or car? Then I met B, and had my answer before I knew the question.

3. A kindhearted woman if ever there was one. Sweet, beautiful and unwilling to watch another living thing suffer. That was her downfall; and mine too. Or so I thought.

Frame Crawl ⋆ Flash Fiction

It's a sight to behold. Passengers screaming, hands waving high with delight; big breasted bimbos bouncing around in bikinis and cut off shorts, their keys 'carabinered' to their belt loops. Glints from sunglasses flashing in the light.

Flip-flops, sunscreen, enough cotton candy and popcorn to make you sick from just the smell alone.
Fuck this place.

“You see it?” A phantom voice asks me from my left ear.
“No. Fast forward two minutes.” I reply.

People scuttle past, sped up. Zooming over ups and downs on the coaster's rails at lightning speed. Funnel cakes disappear in seconds. Lines for rides speed up to a steady, slow walk. Then I see the light flair against the barrel of a gun.

“Pause.” I growl, making a run for the weapon.
Everything freezes. Popcorn halfway to the ground stays put mid-drop. People's faces freeze in laughter, children's tears stop mid-tantrum. Change jettisoned from passenger’s pockets floats in the air, unmoving on its way to the grass below the rides. And all is silent.

“Whadaya see?”
“Gun.”
“Identify. I'll call it in.”
“Headed for them now.”

Three feet. Two. One more and I'm on it. I weave around unmovable fair patrons. Ducking under an arm here, and a balloon there. Squeezing between children and their parents. Disturbing nothing, absorbing everything.

“Joss,” I glance around, puzzled. “Inch forward by a tenth of a frame.” I pull my own weapon out of it's holster and check the sun's position in the sky. As I wait for life around me to move again, I pontificate on what direction the sun might reflect itself off of a metal barrel.

People begin to move again in slow motion. As if they were the subjects of a series of three dimensional photos and I was smack dab in the middle of it all.

That was the worst mode: “frame crawling” they called it. Not for beginners, not for the faint of heart. Not really for me either, but that's what I get paid the big bucks for; not throwing up halfway through a bust.

I see the flash and head for it.

“Pause again.” I bark at Joss. I hear him grunt and my surroundings freeze. Rather than jog towards my target, I walk at a comfortable pace.

A young kid holds a 22 caliber pistol under a long, dark green trench coat, a startled look plastered on his face.
“Got him.”
“Identify.”
I shove my weapon back in its holster and take out my scanner instead. I power it on. It whirs to life, blue lines sluice over the kid’s dead but nervous eyes. The scanner clicks, sending Joss the identity he needs.
“Get it?” I asked Joss.
“Yup.” He chuckled in my ear. “Okie dokie. We're done for the day.”
Life goes back to normal speed. The kid jumps back when he sees me standing in front of him. I wasn't there before, so how could I be here now? Towering over him, getting into his personal space, coming from nowhere? I already know the kid has a million questions. None of them will ever get answered.

He tries to be cool. To not to reveal his weapon. He knows if someone sees it, he's done. Then, seconds pass and he realizes it's too late.
I watch his eyes go blank. He drops to his knees.
His gun clatters to the concrete. People gasp and move back. Some stop to look, but most mind their own business.

When I blink again, the kid and the gun are gone, and all is right with the world again.
For now.

Knots

Have you ever had a knot in your hair when you woke up?
Not ‘tangled hair’. A real, honest to god knot.
One morning, I woke up with several of them tied deliberately into my hair.
I sleep alone. In a locked room with my dog.
I never forget to lock my bedroom door. Ever.
I hardly think my dog is tying knots in my hair while I’m asleep.
Dewclaws tend to make it hard for animals to do things like that.
It had to be done by something else.
Had I been sleepwalking, or sleep tying knots in my hair?
It didn’t seem likely, but I was willing to set up the camera at the foot of my bed the next night to find out.

Cycles

My step dad goes through cycles of inflicting horror and abuse. When he and my mom first got together, he seemed OK. (I will admit, there was never a time I thought he was a ‘normal’ human being; but when they first got together, I still assumed he had some semblance of humanity…)
I was wrong.
Less than a month after they ‘fell in love’, he ‘cycled’.

#52weeks52stories ★ January 2018

Today is the last day of January 2018.

To keep up with my progress for #52weeks52stories, I made a video showcasing some of the stories I've completed this month!

Writing at least one short story a week has given me a myriad of ideas! I'm super grateful for what I've accomplished so far, and I have high hopes for February!!!

Links to stories mentioned in the video:

Hotel (unpublished)
Menagerie (coming soon)

Not mentioned:

Knots (unpublished)
The Man and The Mermaid
I also co-wrote some erotica, but... not brave enough to share them, so we'll just leave it at that for now. (Wink).

Menagerie should be out sometime next month, so check back to see who wins the fight... Magician or Warlock...

Thanks for reading everybody!
And happy writing!

Me Trying To Outline ★ "The Water Curse"

Hi everybody!
I've decided to try my hand at writing a full length novel outline. (Somehow it came out as high fantasy, and I don't really write high fantasy...)

I'm pretty self conscious about my outlining capabilities, but I'm trying to get better at it. = )

I thought maybe someone might like "The Water Curse", or be able to use it for themselves if I posted it...

It's probably crap.
(If it is, let me know where I screwed up in the comment section... wink).

So, in closing, the following outline is free to use.

Take it, dissect it, change it. Make a book or a story out of it... I hope someone can use it. <3 If nothing else, it might give you some ideas...

Thanks for reading!

Petit Démon ★ A Thierry Adler Short Story

The clock's ticking echoed against the walls.
The couple sat across from me, tense.
Quiet.
The infant in the next room was silent. Toys were strewn about the living room; some of them speckled with blood. I looked down at my cup of tea on their coffee table, along with their own cups.
The mother, (Mrs. Masters) her makeup was perfect, her clothes, impeccable.
Not a wrinkle could be seen on her.
The father, wore a light blue sweater, peppered with tiny red stains. His face held the deepest kind of resolve, the kind that forces a man to do the thing he thinks is right, versus the thing he wants to do. A dangerous expression to sport, if you ask me.

Today Is Not The Day ★ Hollie Hausenfluck

What if I told you all those tales from your childhood were real? Vampires only come out at night, werewolves shift at the full moon, zombies eat brains, and ghosts still linger on this earth.

You'd probably think I was crazy.
Hell, sometimes I think I'm crazy.

It all started last year. When I almost died.

What The Heck Is Trigram Origins?

I noticed that with a lot of my stories, (especially where Thierry is concerned), I just throw you guys into the action with little to no explanation...

Sorry about that.
I tend to get a little excited and just plow through the action of whatever story I'm writing.

So, today, I'd like to talk about Trigram Origins, what it is and why I'm doing them.

Troll ★ Trigram Origins

I hate using public restrooms. I always have to line the seats with paper and perform acrobatics to not touch the porcelain.

So, when I’m forced to use a public lavatory, it takes me forever.

On one such occasion, I was setting up the flimsy squares of thin toilet paper just so… and I heard this…thing.

Walking around outside the stalls.
I froze.
Wondered why something that sounded like a horse was clod-hopping through the women’s bathroom. In Houston, Texas no less.

I immediately stood up straight and listened.
I tried not to breathe.
I considered standing on top of the commode itself, but I was almost sure I wouldn’t have time to hide myself.

The Man & The Mermaid (#52weeks52stories)

A while back, I found myself being dragged about Walmart hunting health food with my Mom. Needless to say, health food is not something that interests me much (wink). So, instead of helping, like a decent person, I wrote this short, 13 tweet story, and posted it on Twitter.

10 Weirdo Writing Prompts #3

#1
Someone just walked out of my closet door and saluted me as their king.

#2
Winter falls on the small town of River Rock in July. It never snows here. But that's not even the weird part.

#3
It rains frogs, but only in your back yard.
