Everyday For A Month: Day 8

"We Belong Together"

It was convenient having this gift. She could keep an eye on Roger more easily now than ever before. It was nothing for her to dematerialize and slip between the cracks of a closed door, or slither down a gutter pipe and come out on the 'safe side' of Roger's fenced in backyard.

He'd been wrong to break things off with her. She'd given him her all. What more could a man ask for than such a devoted lover? Why would he look elsewhere for companionship and satisfaction when it was right in front of him?

It'd been quite selfish of Roger to abandon her when she'd needed him the most. He'd told her that being with her made him feel like he was fighting for his sanity; like he couldn't breathe.

Then out of the blue, Cara got sick. Dreadfully sick.

She'd asked him to stay-- at least until she could deal with the emotional withdrawal of his absence without a fever coupled with nausea, but Roger wouldn't be swayed. He moved his things out of her apartment and went back to his house in the suburbs. He changed the locks on all his doors rather than ask her for the keys back. Cara had been devastated.

Three days after he'd abandoned her, she emerged from her bedroom feeling lighter than air. Like a dark wisp. She'd lost her balance in the hallway and instead of falling, she dispersed.

Her sickness had turned into her greatest power. A dream come true. Within a week's time, Cara was back to her old self, but better. She no longer needed to eat or drink anything and could transform herself into a wisp of dark air within seconds.

The first thing she did when she knew the extent of her capabilities was go find Roger.

He was at home, of course, in his precious cubby hole. She watched him watch his favorite show from a window on the left side of his living room. She crawled under his door in smoky wisps and collected herself in the shadows.

"We belong together." she whispered as he was brushing his teeth, and he stopped as if he'd heard her. He turned off the water running in the sink and listened. There was nothing. Roger flipped the lights off and went to bed.

When Cara was sure he was asleep, she straddled him and breathed in his scent. She was so light now, he couldn't even feel her. It was almost like she wasn't even there. But she was. And she needed him to know it.

She traced the outline of his lips with a finger made of shadow. Her digit trailed up his face until it found his nose. She plugged off his nostrils until he was forced to open his mouth and let her in. From there, she crawled inside of him, like a curling snake made of shade and darkness.

When it was over, Roger awoke with a gasp and sat straight up in bed. He had a gnawing feeling that he wasn't alone.

In fact, after that night, he never felt alone again.
